Devan started his squash career at the tender age of 14 at Parktown Boys High school. Since then he has gone from strength to strength and currently plays for UJ. His passion for the game led him to help juniors in a coaching capacity.
He has coached at the following schools, Crawford College Lonehill, The Deutsche Internationale Schule and Helpmekaar. He has been coached by Craig van der Wath (4 times world champion), Mike Toothill (Top 10 Men SA Squash), Gary Plumbstead (Top 10 Men SA Squash) and Mike Bester, each of whom has different coaching styles and has been exposed to these.
Devan is a senior mentor for marking and refereeing and oversees the junior tournaments and ‘coach’ the kids on how to referee and mark. He was the tournament referee for the Junior IPT where he was in charge of refereeing and overseeing the event. In 2014 he was elected to be part of the marking and referring panel for the prestigious international PSA events and the South African National Championships.
Over the past 4 years he has been coaching squash at various schools as well as individual coaching and has accumulated over 300 hours of coaching experience.
He is an assistant coach at Parkview Squash Centre and coaches all ages- ranging from ages 8-60+. Having studied the field of Health Sciences, he utilizes the information he has gained in his coaching, and keeps in mind the cognitive psychomotor systems as well as the developmental models of various ages and cater to the needs of the individual pupils. He uses both a scientific and practical method of coaching.
